He was a bishop, a theologian and an educator, and he wrote widely on faith, prayer, repentance and the life of the Church.
St Nektarios wrote a great deal, especially during his years at the Rizarios School and on Aegina. His works cover theology, Christian moral life, education, Church history, and hymns and poetry. One of the best-known titles is Christology, and another is his writing on repentance and confession.
He wrote to teach. He wanted ordinary believers and young clergy to understand the faith and live it.
True faith. For him, faith was a living trust in God that gives hope and leads to love, not just agreement with ideas.
Divine love (eros). He wrote of God's love as a gift of grace, given to souls that are made pure.
Fasting. He taught that fasting is a discipline of the Church for the healing of the soul, not an outward show.
The Holy Cross. He defended the veneration of the Cross as an apostolic tradition.
The unity of the Church. He wrote on the history of the divisions between Eastern and Western Christianity.
Read his writings in translationO faithful, let us honour Nektarios, divine servant of Christ, offspring of Silivria and guardian of Aegina, who in these latter years was manifested as the true friend of virtue. All manner of healing wells forth for those who in piety cry out: Glory to Christ who glorified you; glory to Him who, through you, wrought wonders; glory to Him who, through you, works healing for all.
